Loeb completed the 3.90 kilometre test, near Penllergaer Forest, in 2 minutes 24.4 seconds, 1.1 seconds up on his team-mate, Daniel Sordo, who was best of the rest in the sister C4 WRC. Loeb and Sordo both opted for just two runs through the 'stage'.

Marcus Gronholm meanwhile was third, 0.2 seconds slower than Sordo, while Petter Solberg was fourth in his Subaru Impreza WRC.

Stobart Ford duo Jari-Matti Latvala and Henning Solberg came in fifth and sixth respectively, split by just 0.3 seconds.

Next up was Chris Atkinson, who did four runs over the test, while Andreas Mikkelsen was eighth in his new 2006 spec Ford Focus WRC car.

Further down the order, Mikko Hirvonen was eighth followed by Manfred Stohl, Matthew Wilson and Xavier Pons, who rounded out the top twelfth. Stohl did five passes through the 'stage', more than any of the other 'big' names.

Sebastian Lindholm had to settle for the 18th best time in the new Suzuki SX4 WRC - more than 10 seconds off the pace.

The ceremonial start for the Wales Rally GB now takes place this evening at 19.30 hours in Cathays Park in Cardiff.

The action begins ‘proper' on Friday, with SS1, the 17.41 kilometre-run through Port Talbort 1 starting at 09.53 hours local time.

Un seul objectif : un top 5 ! L'équipe Citroën Sport ne veut pas se disperser. Ce Wales Rally GB ne doit servir qu'à conquérir un quatrième titre consécutif pour Sébastien Loeb. Le shakedown montre que les Rouges sont prêts !

Cette nouvelle séance d'essais de 3,90 kilomètres met en avant les Citroën C4 WRC de Sébastien Loeb et Dani Sordo. Sous le soleil, le leader du championnat n'a fait que deux passages dont il s'est montré satisfait : « C'était une très bonne entrée en matière. Sous les arbres, l'adhérence était changeante, on passait de parties très boueuses à d'autres beaucoup plus propres et caillouteuses. Notre objectif sur cette épreuve est de décrocher le titre. Si Marcus Grönholm s'impose, nous devons inscrire quatre points, soit une cinquième place. Il est important de terminer le rallye. Nous n'avons donc pas voulu trop solliciter notre C4 WRC. Après nos deux passages en début de matinée, j'ai vu que tout allait sur la voiture et notre shakedown s'est arrêté. »

Plus assidu, Dani Sordo pointe au deuxième rang à 0''1 juste devant Marcus Grönholm. Petter Solberg, Jari-Matti Latvala, Henning Solberg et Chris Atkinson sont dans la même seconde.

Andreas Mikkelsen complète le top 8 pour sa première sortie avec la Ford Focus WRC version 2008. Dixième, Manfred Stohl a complété cinq passages, plus qu'aucun autre pilote.
